Aims

This assignment require us to create a blog to show people the place we studying.It evaluates students’ academic writing skills. It also evaluates the student’s ability to research information to support the arguments proposed in the blog, to cite the sources of information and also to provide a list of references.  Additionally, it allows for increased feelings of ownership of knowledge and learning that supports realistic and authentic ways to participate in learning.

During the process of completing this assignment, i have got to know a lot more about the history of Penang also the famous places and food in Penang. We chose Penang because we think that although Penang is a small state in Malaysia, it is packed with a variety of different food and culture. I have also improved my skills in doing research with lots of information to support my points. This trip has not only helped us in improving our friendship, it also gives us a closer look of our friends and what they are really like.

Task 2 : Oral Presentation

Aims

This assignment evaluates oral presentation and speaking skills. It also evaluates the student’s ability to research information and present an effective presentation of his/her research. In addition, being a group assignment, each student will experience cooperating and collaborating with other peers as a team with a common goal. To demonstrate the principles of communication and behavior in analyzing interaction with others, both at individual and at group levels.

Reflective Essay

Oral presentation helped me in the sense of it is a good practice for me to have the courage and confidence to speak in public and to bring over a message. Throughout the assignment, I realized that it is extremely important to enjoy the process. That way, I will be able to do well in my assignment. I have also known that we need to prepare for an oral presentation. Without preparation and teamwork, the presentation will not be well done.

Task 3 : Comic Strip

Aims

To demonstrate the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others, both at individual and at group levels by creating comic strips and get the comic presented. The group project will demonstrate mastery of selected concepts from the course selected by Students. Mastery of these concepts be manifested by translating the selected concepts to the medium of a dialogue script or through graphics. Images, drawings, text and so on must be well edited, legible and composed.

Comic strip is a very interesting assignment in my opinion. When producing the comic strip, we used job specialization be fasten our progress. With one person coming out with an idea and story line, two person in charge of drawing and two for coloring. With a good teamwork and cooperation, I think we did a fairly good job for this assignment.

Even though we had arguments when we were doing these 3 tasks, but overall we managed to handle the conflicts pretty well and got things sort out eventually. All of the assignments above are group assignments, therefore, teamwork is essential in order to perfect our work. I think our group has shown good chemistry and we supported each other well in the process.

REFLECTIVE ESSAY

For the purpose of doing a portfolio for FNBE March intake semester two, Introduction to Business, it was required to write a reflective essay. By taking Introduction to Business, I have learned a lot of new things and know how a business actually started out. The most interesting topic that I found is chapter 5, Managing Employees. Employees have lots of different attitudes towards their job and their attitude will greatly affects their hunger towards success. What I think is really useful for me in the future is that I have known the key to being a good employee. Employees that have the big 5 ‘OCEAN’ are more likely to be hired. The big 5 consists of openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Personally, I think I have openness in me. Although I would like to possess all the other 4 personalities, I know that personalities cannot be changed. How an employer treats the employees will also affect their attitude towards the job. For example, an employee that receives a fair pay and great responsibility in their job is likely to be satisfied with their job. Hence be more productive and loyal to the firm. An interesting part in Introduction to Business is that it teaches me how a human is motivated by their needs. Most importantly, the basic needs have to be satisfied, which are the physiological needs and safety needs. It is important to satisfy one’s hunger and for one to feel safe and sheltered. Moving on to the advanced needs, we have social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. Those are extras in life but is still has great importance. Having friends, getting promoted in job, and finding the true meanings of life are examples of advanced needs. Introduction to Business has benefitted me a lot to be more prepared in the future.

REFLECTIVE ESSAY

I was given a task to write a reflective essay for portfolio FNBE march 2012 semester two, Principles of Economics. During the classes of Principles of Economics, I have learned about the important things in economics, the rise and fall of the market etc. We were asked to do a presentation of a topic of our own selection. We chose ‘money’ as our topic. We have prepared slides on everything we need to know about money. From the origin of money, to currencies and also inflation of money. By preparing for this presentation, I realized that we have come to know more about the details of the topic that we chose to talk about. It also helped us to understand Principles of Economics better. However, my favorite topic in Principles of Economics is Market Competition. In this topic, I have learned how powerful and strong a monopoly can be. It faces nearly zero competition in the process of dominating market as it has a high barrier to entry as protection. Moreover, several dominating force can act together to make maximum profit out of consumers by setting a universe high price for a certain product that is agreed upon. It makes me realize how important it is to be a monopoly of a market. To help us understand better with this topic, our lecturer has introduced a new way of teaching and in fact it is an interesting way, by giving us a chance to play board game ‘monopoly’. This game enables us to experience ourselves as a monopoly and also facing a monopoly. I have enjoyed during Principles of Economics class throughout the semester thanks to the interesting teaching of our lecturer.

Task 1: Project 1 part 1, compare or contrast on a tv show genre

Aim :

In this assignment, we were to write a 5 paragraph essay that consists of 600-1000 words. This essay should be about comparing or contrasting two television shows of the same genre. This assignment is a practice for students to cite references, if any, according to the APA citation method accurately and effectively.

Reflective Essay:
I did my fair bit of research on television shows for this assignment and have chosen reality television show as my genre. The two reality series that I have decided to compare were 'Iron Chef' and 'American Idol'. I have learned to observe and differentiate the genres in tv shows, it has been an interesting experience.

Task 2: Project 1 Part 2, compare and contrast two paintings

Aim :
In a group of two, we were given a gallery to visit. We have to choose two or more paintings to be compared on and to write an essay of 500-1000 words. This is a practice for us to collect useful information and analyse it so that we can describe the differences and similarity in our own words.

Reflective Essay :I have had a good experience of visiting a local art gallery for the first time. This assignment helped me in understanding paintings in my own way and with imagination. I have also noticed that different medium used on the paintings can create different meaning and feel to the paintings. It was also a good practice for me to write with appropriate academic English.

Task 3: Project 2

Aim : 
In a group of four, we were to do a research of an old business that has 15 years of more history. The site that was given to us is Klang. This assignment gave us a chance to visit Klang and be able to collect data and useful information of the old business. We were also asked to present our research to a certain audience.

Reflective Essay :
In this assignment, the preparation work has to be well done. The type of business that we have chosen is Traditional Chinese Medicine Hall. After some discussions, we have come up with several important questions to obtain the information needed. We have also visited many Traditional Chinese Medicine halls in order to get optimum information. There are also some owners who did not like the idea of interviewing. I have been able to analyse and organize the data collected and presented them to the selected audience.

The three assignments have all been interesting and they are all new experiences for me. It was really fun to be able to visit new places and to collect information. Group assignments have been especially enjoyable as the chemistry shown between the group mates has been satisfying. We divided our jobs equally and rightly so and it resulted in more efficient work rate for our group.

Task 1: Graphical timeline and Culture Journal of the Ancient Civilization in South East Asia

Aim :
In a group of two, we were asked to do a research to introduce the Western and Eastern culture and civilization through an overview of archaeological discoveries, ancient monuments, artworks, philosophy and achievement of great leaders from prehistoric to present. It is a work for us to practice our research skills and presentation skills in order to understand better the culture and civilization.

Reflective :

In this group assignment, my partner and I were given the Khmer Empire as our research location. Our research enabled us to know that Angkor Wat is a very important structure for Khmer Empire. Therefore, we decided to do a timeline consisting of a model of Angkor Wat. Our timeline has two pieces of boards with the upper on being the base of the model while the bottom one being the information of researches that we have done. We also did an individual journal for us to understand and to organize the information that we got from the research. I think I have better knowledge on the culture and civilization of the Khmer Empire after completing this assignment.

Task 2: Messages from The Past

Aim :
The aim of the project is to propose a play in video format from a specific civilization. We are to select an event for the play based on themes such as sociology, engineering, archaeology or myth and legends of the civilization. We were asked to conduct a thorough research of the characteristics of the events chosen and perform the findings to the class in any form of presentations deemed best.

Reflective Essay:
The movie that we were given was 'Anna and the King'. It is a movie of the ancient Siam. After thorough discussions with our group mates, we have decided to do a puppet show. In order to progress faster and more effectively, we divided ourselves into a few departments, all with different roles such as script writing, costume designing, puppet making, voice dubbing, scene making and so on. This way, I think we have a faster work rate and got things done more perfectly. We realize how much hard work must be put in to produce such a short clip. We also have the story carved firmly in our heart.

Task 3: Art + Architecture + Culture


Aim :
I was asked to do a literature research on places of interest of our site visit. I was required to study the theme given and its connection between the historical, architectural and social aspects of the place and to show basic skills on enquiry, investigation, application and presentation of relevant information. At the end of the research, I was required to design a graphical expression of my findings in a concise graphical book based on the place I was researching.

Reflective Essay :
I have chosen food culture for this assignment. My theme is cake house that has relaxing nature to it. To complete this assignment, I went to several places to research about cake houses with the right concept. I think i have been able to show the human activities and spaces in the cake houses chosen in my photos. I chose this theme because i think cake house can also be a place for us to relax and chill instead of only being a place to satisfy our hunger or desire for cakes.

Out of all the assignments above, I think the second assignment is the most interesting one. It requires good team work and understanding and I think we did well in that aspect. All these assignments have helped me in understanding culture differently. It has been a very interesting subject for me to have added knowledge regarding interactions between human kind.

Task 1: Sketches
Aim :
In this task, we are required to use the rendering skills taught to produce 8 sketches in A5 size paper. Each sketch has a theme that we have to follow. Which are body parts/figures/nature, object projection, geometric projection, a city, one point perspective of an area in Taylor's University, two point perspective of an area in Taylor's University, details in Taylor's University and trace a picture of a building. All these sketches must be done free hand.

Reflective Essay :

I have mastered new rendering skills thanks to this assignment. I have learned that different line weights creates different volume. In addition, I think I have better observation skills now to observe an object or scenery from the right angle. I have also learned to be more detailed.

Task 2: Site Analysis

Aim :
Task 2 is separate into part A & B, a site was given to us to study on. Project 2A is more to introducing and guiding the way to illustrate orthographic drawings and applying basic drawing conventions and representation while project 2B aims to introduce and guide the students to illustrate Bubble Diagrams and Diagrammatic Analysis through observation and drawings of the site given in Project 2A. 
Reflective :
In this task, we were asked to do a site analysis with consists of proper orthographic drawings and proper drawing conventions and representations of a space that was given. Upon completing this assignment, I was able to identify the important contents in a site analysis. I have learned to use the professional technique to do the drawing, with the correct symbols and line weights involved. After doing this task, I have also realized how important it is to do a site analysis before starting any project on your site.

Task 3: Wall Installation Proposal

Aim :
This task requires us to design a wall installation that can help utilize space in our site given. This should be helped by the site analysis that is already done. This assignments is to train our observation and visualization skills by using the site analysis to identify the need of the site and how we can improve it. It also gives us a chance to show our creativity by putting the right things at the right place with a new design.

Reflective : 
For this task, we were asked to organize and present our design on two pieces of A2 size presentation board. To support my idea, i did a model to help in visualizing the design in place. I managed to demonstrate observation skills and can record, organize, interpret and describe a variety of issues via visual communications effectively. I also used different techniques to show my idea better and to attract attention and interest.
